Summer Solstice sunset Malham

Summer Solstice sunset Malham - Yorkshire Dales

I've waited three years to capture this image. This tiny little, and sadly dead, tree sits in a little fold in the hills above Malham village. In June the sun sets behind it. The last three years have been cloudy on the solstice, but not this year. The sky was showing great promise all evening, with atmosspheric cloud to the north and west. As the sun started to sink it shone through a gap in the cloud like a giant spotlight, sending beams of light in to the sky, and bathing the landscape in a gentle golden light. The sky got even better after this and I kept on shooting, but I do prefer the wow element the setting sun brings to the image. Nikon D800 24mm lens f11 1/4 second. 21/6/2014 21.11.
